Is It Time For Your Child’s Initial Dental Exam?
Welcome back to our oral health blog! Your friends at Oregon City Family Dentistry would like to wish you a very Happy New Year!
We hope that you will be visiting our Oregon City, OR dentist’s office at least twice in 2016. That will give us a chance to stay in tune with your dental needs and keep your mouth in excellent condition. If you have a young one, this might even be the year to bring them in for their first checkup. Did you know that there is dangerous bacteria present in your child’s mouth even before they get their first tooth?
Around here, we love treating children and we promise to take great care in looking after your child’s dentistry needs and monitoring the growth of their baby teeth, and ultimately their permanent teeth.
Our caring and compassionate staff is equipped to handle all aspects of your child’s unfolding dental needs. And to make it an enjoyable experience from the very start, we also feature a special section in our office that we call the “kids’ corner.” This is the area where parents can easily keep their children entertained while they are here.
Obviously, we are more than ready for your child’s first visit, but how will you know when your child is ready for us?
Every parent wonders the same thing at one time or another. We can tell you that it is always better to start them at a young age to get ahead of any potential problems and so that they will be at ease around dentists the rest of their life.
At What Age Are Kids Ready For The Dentist?
We suggest that you bring your child to see your Oregon City dentist shortly after their first tooth appears or by the age of 2, whichever comes first.
Just so you know, the child’s initial visits are usually done in the comfort and security of the parent’s lap.
Over the course of those first few appointments, we’ll give your child a basic exam to make sure their baby teeth are developing properly.
We also set them in the dentist’s chair and let them play with the air and water hoses.
Our goal with all this is to monitor their health but we also want to help them get them comfortable with a dental office. For the rest of their lives, having a dentist that they can trust will be key to maintaining general health and wellness.
Fear of the dentist and dental anxiety are all too common conditions in this country and they are usually rooted in a bad experience early in life. We want to prevent this from happening with your child because having an inclination to avoid the dentist can create big problems later in life.
What Do These Visits Look Like?
Typically, we start teeth cleanings around the age of three years. At that stage we will begin polishing their teeth to remove any plaque. Our hygienists and assistants are extremely gentle, and most of them are mothers and know just how to make your tender children feel at ease.
Regularly visiting our office is important for your child’s development. Even though baby teeth fall out, they are just as necessary as adult teeth. They play a role in chewing and speaking and they serve as placeholders for your child’s permanent teeth.
Plus, baby teeth are just as susceptible to cavities as permanent teeth. As it happens, something like 50 percent of children in America have a cavity by the time they are 5 years old. Early tooth loss for kids can actually cause the adult teeth to wander and cause crowding or large gaps.
Who would wish that on their child?
We are here to be your partner in oral health. As such, we’ll continue to monitor your child’s tooth development and recommend necessary treatment, whether it’s preventative, restorative, or arranging for orthodontic treatment.
We also offer fluoride treatments to help in the prevention of cavities and we can provide dental sealants as well. Dental sealants are normally placed on permanent molars and premolars. By placing a sealant on the molars and premolars, we can stop cavity-causing plaque and acids from reaching the tiny crevices in your tooth.
Trust us, we’ve got your child covered!
Oregon City Family Dentistry Tries To Make It Easy
We know that this might not be the first thing on your child’s mind. So, we do our best to engage children and make it fun for them to keep up with their teeth. We also have monthly prize drawings for children who go cavity free between dental checkups. Every child leaves with a personal home care kit and a prize from the treasure drawer.
