Make Your Child’s First Dental Appointment Fun
Hello out there. Thanks for visiting the Oregon City Family Dentistry blog! If you are looking for a great dental practice in Oregon City, Oregon, we hope you will pay us a visit in-person. Especially if you have young children. You know as well as we do that, sooner or later, your child will need to visit a (preferably gentle) dentist to enter into a partnership and build the sort of trust that will keep them healthy throughout life.
We think that this is just the place to establish that initial dentist-patient relationship. It’s not like our office is filled with balloons and clowns, but we do try to make it fun and engaging for the little ones!
What Is The Best Age For Dental Appointments?
Remember, even before your child gets their first tooth, there is dangerous bacteria present in the mouth. We recommend that you bring your child to see us shortly after their first tooth appears or by the age of 2. We want them to be able to sit up comfortably and be able to focus (as much as a 2 year old possibly can).
It won’t be a big deal because most initial visits are usually completed from the comfort and security of the parent’s arms. We don’t want to freak them out unnecessarily.
We will make use of those first few appointments to give your child a basic exam, just to make sure their baby teeth are developing properly and that nothing looks out of sorts in their oral cavity.
For part of those sessions, we will allow them to sit in the dentist’s chair and let them play with the air and water hoses, and so forth. We want to monitor their health and what not, but we also want to help them get feel at ease in a dental office. As we alluded to earlier, having a good relationship with a dentist that they can trust will be essential for maintaining overall health and wellness at every stage of life.
Fear of the dentist is an all too common phenomenon in the United States. In many cases it can be traced back to a bad dental experience early in life. We want to prevent dental anxiety from happening with your child because avoiding dental care can lead to all kinds of trouble down the road.
When Do The Cleanings Start?
At Oregon City Family Dentistry, we start professional teeth cleanings around the age of three years. At that time, we will also be polishing their teeth to remove any tartar and plaque.
Just so you know, our hygienists and assistants are very calm and gentle. In fact, most of them are mothers themselves. As such, they know how to make a child feel welcome and relaxed while they are here.
Regular visits are crucial to your child’s development. Sure, baby teeth are not permanent, but they are just as important as adult teeth. Baby teeth play a part in everyday activities such as chewing and speaking, and they serve as a rough draft for your child’s permanent teeth.
The thing to consider is that, baby teeth are just as susceptible to tooth decay as permanent teeth. This can cause unwanted trouble.
We think that prevention is always better than looking for a cure!
Once entrusted to our care, we’ll be here to monitor your child’s tooth development and recommend and needed treatments, whether it’s preventative, restorative, or setting up orthodontic solutions.
Beyond that, we also offer fluoride treatments to help in the prevention of cavities and we can provide dental sealants as well.
Dental sealants are normally placed on permanent molars and premolars. By placing a sealant on the molars and premolars, we can stop cavity-causing plaque and acids from reaching the tiny crevices in your tooth. Doesn’t that sound good?
If you are unsure as to your child’s readiness for all of that, just give us a call to discuss the possibilities.
