Detecting Gum Disease
In case you didn’t realize it, gum disease is a big problem in the United States. The symptoms of gum disease vary depending on the stage you are dealing with. This condition can result in swelling and bleeding at first and get progressively worse from there.
The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. With an aggressive approach and strict at-home care on your part, we’re often able to reverse the effects of gingivitis. That’s the good news.
The bad news is that it often goes unnoticed until much later. The most serious form of gum disease is called periodontitis. At this stage, patients often have excruciating pains and will have developed infected pockets around the gumline. Periodontitis is not something you can ignore, as it will almost certainly spread and lead to bone loss and even total tooth loss.
One of the scariest things about gum disease is that it can show up with little to no warning. We often see patients who have experienced no discomfort, yet they have advanced stages of gum disease and need immediate care to turn things around.
The other thing to consider is that gum disease rarely stops at wreaking havoc in your mouth. It has been linked with respiratory disease, heart disease, and even cancer.
But, with us on your side, you can fare better than that!
Treating Gum Disease
We are here to help you get through whatever dental challenges come your way. Drs. Annalisa and Kyle Smith offer aggressive treatments for patients struggling with gum disease. While the damage is not always reversible, with proper home care and regular visits, we can keep your mouth healthy and prevent future tooth loss.
Did you know that plaque and bacteria can create periodontal pockets and greatly threaten your overall well-being? That’s why our team provides scaling and root planing deep cleaning to remove any plaque and tartar from around and below the gumline. Since only about 60 percent of your tooth is above the gums, by offering deep cleanings, we can effectively clean the entire tooth and reduce the risk of the gum disease advancing on to cause more trouble.
In the event that you already have gum disease, we can also prescribe antibiotics for the infection. In such a situation, we would encourage you to visit our office more than usual, until things get back to normal, for checkups and cleanings.
