Preparing For Your Child’s First Dental Appointment

Welcome back to our dentistry blog. In Oregon City, OR, we are the dental practice that you can count on to put your family first.

At Oregon City Family Dentistry, we treat patients of all ages but we especially love working with children. In fact, that’s the reason most of us got into the dental field to begin with.

Once entrusted to our care, we will take great care in looking after your child’s oral health needs and monitoring the growth of their baby teeth, and eventually their permanent teeth.

We have a kind and compassionate staff that is trained to handle every aspect of your child’s emerging dental needs. And to make it a pleasant experience from the get-go, we also feature a special area in our office space that we call the “kids’ corner.” This is the section where parents can keep their children entertained while they are here.

Now that you know we are ready for your child’s first visit, how will you know when your child is ready for us?

This is something that every parent asks at one point or another. We believe that it is always better to start at a young age because there is dangerous bacteria present even before the first tooth appears.

What Age Is Appropriate For Dental Appointments?

As a rule of thumb, we suggest that you bring your child to see your Oregon City dentist shortly after their first tooth appears or by the age of 2.

The child’s initial visits are usually done in the comfort and security of the parent’s arms.

During those first few appointments, we’ll give your child a basic exam to make sure their baby teeth are developing properly.

We usually sit them in the dentist’s chair and let them play with the air and water hoses.

Our primary goal is to monitor their health but we also want to help them get them comfortable with a dental office. For the rest of their lives, having a dentist that they can trust will be key to maintaining overall health and wellness.

Dental anxiety is all too common in the United States and it usually stems from a bad experience early in life. We want to prevent this from happening with your child because having any reason to avoid the dentist can create big problems eventually.

What Will These Visits Entail?

We start cleanings around the age of three years. At that stage we will begin polishing their teeth to remove any plaque. Our hygienists and assistants are extremely gentle, and most of them are mothers and know just how to make your tender children feel at ease.

Coming in regularly is important for your child’s development. Even though baby teeth fall out, they are just as necessary as adult teeth. They play a role in chewing and speaking and they serve as placeholders for your child’s permanent teeth.

What’s more, baby teeth are just as susceptible to cavities as permanent teeth. In fact, about 50 percent of children in America have a cavity by the time they are 5 years old. Early tooth loss for kids can actually cause the adult teeth to wander and cause crowding or large gaps.

No one wants that for their child!

As your partner in oral health, we’ll continue to monitor your child’s tooth development and recommend necessary treatment, whether it’s preventative, restorative, or arranging for orthodontic treatment.

We also offer fluoride treatments to help in the prevention of cavities and we can provide dental sealants as well. Dental sealants are typically placed on permanent molars and premolars. By placing a sealant on the molars and premolars, we can stop cavity-causing plaque and acids from reaching the tiny crevices in your tooth.

Dentistry Is Fun At Oregon City Family Dentistry

We do our best to engage children and make it fun for them to keep up with their teeth. We have monthly prize drawings for children who are cavity free between dental checkups. Every child leaves with a personal home care kit and a prize from the treasure drawer.
