A regular checkup has more power than simply leaving your teeth feeling smooth and polished. Unfortunately, only about 40 percent of Americans regularly see a dentist, and about 5 percent of the country avoids the dentist at all costs. Of course, your dental problems do not disappear. In fact, without the proper dental care, your tiny cavity could turn into something much more serious and painful.
If you maintain your checkups, you substantially lower your risk of facing serious dental issues down the road, like gum disease, root canals, and other oral health problems. During your exam, we check for cavities and abnormalities in your mouth. We use digital X-rays and intraoral cameras to diagnose and then educate patients about their oral health.
During your cleanings, our professional staff will gently examine your mouth and remove any plaque or tartar buildup. Plaque and tartar can build up around a tooth and cause decay or gum issues. While plaque is soft and can be removed by thorough brushing, tartar is much harder and can only be removed by an oral health professional. Following your cleanings, we polish the teeth to make it harder for harmful bacteria and plaque to stick to the surface of your teeth.
Drs. Annalisa and Kyle Smith will exam your mouth following your cleaning and perform a quick oral cancer screening by checking for abnormalities in the mouth, tongue, throat, and lips. The doctors also provide tobacco cessation and nutritional counseling.
As an office dedicated to treating children, we provide dental sealants and fluoride varnishes that will help keep your children cavity free. The dental sealants can be placed on molars and premolars that are free of tooth decay. The sealants protect the surface of the tooth and keep harmful acids and plaque from making their way into tiny grooves of the teeth.
Our office also closely monitors your gums for signs of gum disease. Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss and can wreak havoc on an otherwise healthy and beautiful mouth. Our office treats gum disease with nonsurgical deep cleanings that allow us to clean the area of the tooth beneath the gumline to reduce the risk of a periodontal pocket forming. A periodontal pocket can be extremely painful and lead to a widespread infection in the mouth.
Drs. Annalisa and Kyle Smith love to educate their patients about the latest treatments available in dentistry, and they work with every patient to find the most successful home oral hygiene program. We offer sleep apnea treatment, as well as mouthguards for sports, bruxism and TMJ Disorder.
