Summer is officially here. We’re gearing up for all that summer entails: Planning a family vacation, juggling your kids now that school’s out, or maybe just looking forward to being outdoors more.
With the almost seismic shift that occurs for any family’s dynamic once summer starts, it can be easy to forget your smile.
While we discussed how summer fun can lead to oral health problems in an earlier post, today we want to talk with you about one of the least exciting – but crucially important – dental procedures on the face of the earth: teeth cleanings.
It doesn’t matter what age you are because summertime can be a perfect time to schedule a teeth cleaning in advance of special occasions.
Summer is wedding season, and since June brides are rarely in short supply, chances are you will have some kind of big gathering on your horizon before fall comes around.
A teeth cleaning can lighten your smile, but more importantly, it can do two big things for your smile, your self-esteem, and how other perceive you.
Let’s get started!
A Clean Slate For Your Masterpiece
Just as each journey starts with a first step, so does a professional teeth cleaning represent the ground floor for any type of procedure – cosmetic, restorative, or otherwise.
In fact, a teeth cleaning can be the first and last step of your journey – that is, if you’ve been regularly keeping up with your oral hygiene in the way that you should be. If you’ve been brushing and flossing daily, then chances are you can benefit from the cosmetic aspects of a simple teeth cleaning.
That’s right: There are cosmetic dentistry benefits to a teeth cleaning. The most obvious example that comes to my mind is that, by removing layers of plaque which can build up along your gumline (defying even your best hygienic efforts), you are actually taking steps to lighten the shade of your teeth.
Or let’s say that you are in need of more … extensive work. A teeth cleaning will be the first procedure performed prior to almost any other treatment. A clean mouth is like a painter’s canvas, in a way; once the canvas has been primed, there is virtually no limit to the beauty which can be created upon it.
The same is true for your smile. By cleaning it and getting your smile ready for any number of cosmetic or restorative dentistry treatments, you are creating infinite potential for your smile. It’s been said that “the sky’s the limit.”
Nowhere is this truer than in our Oregon City dentist’s office, especially with a patient who is ready to get the treatment that they deserve.
Checking The Canvas
As we noted earlier, almost any procedure we do will start with a professional cleaning.
But this isn’t the only reason we encourage you to bring every member of your family for a cleaning every six months.
We also take the time to examine your mouth during your visit.
According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control, nearly half of all adults in the United States have some form of gum disease. (Coincidentally, this fits nicely with the American Dental Association survey in which less than half of adults reported flossing on a daily basis.)
When you visit us, we will check for any symptoms of gum disease. If we find anything, we will recommend the appropriate periodontal treatment.
But we aren’t just looking for cavities and gum disease.
We also check the alignment of your teeth. We watch for any changes since your previous visit. Depending on your age, it could indicate that your wisdom teeth are coming in or some other issue is affecting your teeth.
We also conduct oral cancer screenings for our adult patients. Sadly, 8,000 people die from oral cancer every year. We know that early detection helps to make treatment more effective, and that helps to improve long-term survival rates.
Is It Time For A Check-Up?
When is the last time you visited the dentist? Have you scheduled your next appointment? If not, now is the time, and if you live in or near Oregon City, then Oregon City Family Dentistry would be happy to welcome you to our office.
We will check for any problems, remove any plaque or tartar, and polish your teeth to help keep them looking their best.
